Before the First Cut: How Stone Companies Use MilliDraw for Marble Work

The saw may make the irreversible cut, but the decisions that determine whether a marble piece fits begin much earlier: in the room, while someone is still measuring walls, corners, openings, and everything that is not quite square.

The Work Starts at the Site

Teams at different stone-fabrication companies are using MilliDraw in parts of the measurement and workshop-handoff process. Their names and project details remain private, so the workflow below combines representative stone jobs rather than presenting one company as a case study. Whether the job is a kitchen worktop, vanity top, wall cladding, threshold, or fireplace surround, the underlying need is similar: real measurements must become geometry another person can understand before a slab is touched.

A wall described as “2,840 mm long” is not yet a fabrication reference. The fabricator also needs to know where that length begins and ends, whether the adjoining corners are square, how the front edge relates to the cabinets, and where the sink, hob, tap, column, or service opening sits. MilliDraw lets the person on site draw that shape on iPad, enter exact lengths and angles, and place typed notes next to the geometry they describe.

Find the Awkward Geometry Before Leaving

Real rooms are rarely ideal rectangles. Plaster bows, old walls drift, corners open or close, and a cabinet run may sit differently from the wall behind it. During the survey, the team can draw the perimeter segment by segment, add diagonals or angles where they matter, and mark cutouts and reference points. Closing the shape on screen makes inconsistencies visible while the site is still available.

If two measurements cannot describe the same corner, that is the moment to check them—not after the slab has reached the bridge saw. The drawing can be corrected immediately and annotated with conditions that a clean geometric outline alone would miss, such as an uneven wall, a planned overhang, a seam, or an edge that must remain unfinished for a later joint.

From Survey to a Workshop Reference

Back at the workshop, the drawing gives estimators, drafters, fabricators, and installers one shared reference. A dimensioned PDF is straightforward to review, print, mark up, or send with the job. A DXF provides vector geometry for a controlled CAD handoff when that is useful. The team is no longer trying to reconstruct a shape from photos, messages, and a page of measurements whose reference points are unclear.

That handoff also helps the conversation around slab layout. Marble is not a uniform sheet. Vein direction, color changes, fissures, repaired areas, and the relationship between adjoining pieces can affect where a part should sit on the slab. The measured drawing defines the required shape and notes; the stone specialist can then assess orientation, seams, matching, usable areas, and allowances against the actual material.

The Final Check Still Belongs to the Fabricator

MilliDraw is a clear measurement and communication tool. It does not replace a physical or digital final template where the job requires one, workshop validation, CAD/CAM preparation, toolpaths, kerf and machining allowances, edge or cutout engineering, or the bridge-saw, waterjet, or CNC machine setup. Before cutting, the responsible fabricator must verify the drawing against the approved template, slab, equipment, tolerances, and installation requirements.

Cutting Is Only One Stage

Once the job is validated and programmed in the workshop’s production system, cutting can begin. The pieces may then move through CNC work for sink or hob openings, manual detailing, edge profiling, polishing, reinforcement, cleaning, and inspection. Each operation can expose a different problem: a fragile bridge around a cutout, a visible seam that needs better vein continuity, or an edge treatment that changes the finished dimension.

A good site drawing does not automate those decisions. It gives the craft team a cleaner starting point and preserves the original intent as the job passes between roles. The PDF can stay with the work order; notes can explain which face meets a wall, which edge is visible, and which dimensions matter at installation.

The Test Comes at Installation

Installation is where site measurement, workshop judgment, and stone craftsmanship meet. The crew dry fits the pieces, checks seams and overhangs, confirms clearances around appliances and fixtures, and makes sure the finished edges sit as intended. Marble remains a natural material and buildings remain imperfect, so professional tolerances and installation decisions still matter.

What changes with a clearer measured drawing is the quality of the information that reaches this stage. Fewer details depend on memory. Questions can refer to a specific line or note. If a revision is needed, the geometry can be updated and exported again instead of redrawing the whole survey.
